Hootenanny: A Folk Song Sing-Along

The hootenanny is a folk music party – a chance to share songs and sing together. Join bilingual singer-songwriters Will Stroet of Will’s Jams and Jessica Mai on an interactive musical journey celebrating folk icons such as Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Stan Rogers, Bob Dylan, Peter Paul and Mary, Woody Guthrie, as well as some French Canadian folk songs. Students will share in the joy of singing by learning the choruses of these beloved folk songs, while also learning about the artists and the stories behind their songs, the song-writing process and the many styles that make up the folk cannon. Folk Songwriting Workshops

As a former music teacher who has been leading songwriting workshops for children across Canada and in China, Will has developed a fun and effective method to harness children’s creativity in writing songs. His interactive workshops involve critical thinking, creative writing, call and response, actions, presentation skills and performance opportunities. Will teaches students about the basics of songwriting including: lyric, chorus and verse composition; rhythm and rhyme schemes; and melody and harmony. By the end of the session, students will have collaboratively composed a song that is performance ready. The song topic can be tied to any curricular theme. If the Hootenanny show is booked with a workshop, Will and Jessica Mai can lead a half-day songwriting workshop followed by the show in the afternoon. Get in touch to discuss a customized songwriting residency.

Will’s Jams brings authentic family friendly music to CBC Kids and is a fan favourite on TV, online and at our events.

Marie McCann, Senior Director of Children’s Content , CBC Kids

I have booked Will Stroet and his Backyard Band for several family events and festivals, including the Whistler Children’s Festival and the Vancouver International Children’s Festival over the past 10 years. Drawing from his own experiences, Will creates songs and stories that entertain the whole family with his highly participatory concerts. He weaves imaginative wordplay with great melodies all to great effect. He is hugely entertaining and engages children on so many levels, from great action songs to thoughtful environmental issues ballads. There seems to be something for everyone, from the many parents who are always tapping to the tunes, to the youngest of the little ones. Will is very impressive! It would be hard to recommend a more energetic, extremely talented, and entertaining children’s performer.
